International Organisations and the Atom: How the IAEA, EURATOM, COMECON and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency developed societal engagement Paul Josephson (Colby College) and Markku Lehtonen (University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona)
This webinar considers the increasingly public interaction of several major international organizations concerned with nuclear energy. If at first their audiences included mainly industry representatives, government promoters and regulators, then in the 1970s they gradually began to more actively engage the publics across Europe. In the 21st century these organizations now see public interface as increasingly crucial to their activities -- especially concerning accident reporting and the ongoing effort to find solutions to the problem of radioactive waste. The socialist nations (until 1991) were an interesting case and exception in a number of ways. Presentation is available here.
