Bernd Helmbold

Bernd Helmbold (Dr. des. M.Sc.) works as a research associate for history of science at Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena. His field of work is history of physics and technics. Here Helmbold investigating the field of physics in the GDR with the role of their actors and the German specialists in the soviet atomic program and their influences on the GDR nuclear power program.
Helmbold’s interest in the history of nuclear energy and society is related to the comparative and transnational perspective of the project and the perspective of the society in socialist countries in relation to technological change and risk. Also the hegemonic role of the USSR in the Eastern Bloc in nuclear power technologies is one point of interest.
Within HoNEST, Helmbold contributes with the nuclear history of the GDR under the perspectives of scientific research and social impact.
